Over-Rated Romance

Yes, all old film aficionados are well aware of the Gable-Lombard romance. But to say it was the love story of the century is ridiculous. I hate to burst some swooning balloons, but what makes it romantic was Lombard's very tragic death. Right before she died, the marriage was already showing signs of trouble. Gable could not help fooling around and Lombard was understandably jealous and a little possessive. It is conventional wisdom that she took the plane instead of the train in order to get home ASAP because she was worried Gable might be having an affair with his current co-star, Lana Turner. Chances are if Lombard had lived, the two of them would have eventually divorced and their marriage would have been just another Hollywood pairing.

This movie is 90% fiction. If you want to believe it, then don't make an attempt to look beneath the surface. You may not like what you find.
