Silly ending.

Am I the only one who thought the end was not pleasing at all. What do we have? Two reporters who will write/air their articles about the supstitution of key politicians in the world by clones. Because the doubles are not robots, that is said on screen. They are living things made out of the original's DNA. Yes the reporters survived and got away. But the clones are not robots and the lab and such will be gone before their articles are finished. It would not have been a bad ending if there was a sequel made. And perhaps that was the plan. But as the final chapter in the Westworld/Futureworld saga it just doesn't deliver.

Agreed the ending is classic, but a little silly, I was however quite satisfied.

What was to stop Schneider from pulling them off the plane on some pretext or having them killed when they got home? And why in the world would he have allowed Peter Fonda to call the outside world before they hopped the plane? By all indications, that airport actually belonged to Delos. He could have done anything he wanted to!

And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

reply

There is no indication that the entire airport belonged to Delos, also if they tried to pull passengers off a commercial jet there would be hell to pay, as Delos doesn't seem to be controlling the police in the civilian world. Only a small portion of the passengers on the plane were clones (the dignitaries). The rest were "normal" wealthy tourists of no interest for Delos to clone, so forcing themselves onto a plane and dragging the two reporters off it in front of all these people would certainly create a huge scene. Also, unless one of those killer Samurai robots can turn into a flying missile they don't seem to have the equipment to start shooting down passenger planes.

reply

I disagree that Delos would have "no interest" in cloning the "normal" wealthy tourists as money is power and to some degree control.

However, there is the problem of who would believe the story?

No matter how well written the story would come off as the rambling of a guy hiding in his homemade bunker for fear of the black helicopters piloted by the aliens from Area 51 who are led by Elvis are after him.

As for Delos not controlling cops in the outside world what happened to the man shot near the start of the film? We see NOTHING regarding an investigation by the cops as to why a man dies with a wound in his back IN A PUBLIC PLACE.

reply

A certain degree of ambiguity would have been a much more subtle and satisfactory ending than the ridiculous finger-let the viewer decide if they`re clones.

reply

Yeah, totally agree.

If it was just left with subtle hints towards them either being robot-clones or humans rather than a straight up total reveal it would have been better. But, they had fun with it i guess lol

this coming HBO 'Westworld' series will prob. be dark af and mysterious/suspenseful as sh!t, i hope.

reply

The ending befits the whole film. Just weak and silly all around. BTW I found it hilarious that the Fonda character's one fingered salute was apparently "modified " for American television.🐭

reply

It would probably have been no problem for Delos to send a robot assassin after him in order to silence him. The police probably would have no recourse but to shelve the investigation if Delos denied knowledge and finding the culprit was impossible.

reply

Frankly I would have loved if the ending was left ambiguous by not letting the audience know who really left. Would make the ending far more interesting and mysterious instead of everything ending in a neatly tied package.

reply

Prior to the dream scene it's pretty good. Has a nice mystery vibe and then the dream sequence happens - wow that really felt forced and not in keeping with the tone - and the whole thing kind of falls apart. The ending is really silly. The film moves away from the Westworld universe and becomes more like Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

It's one of the films where you feel the ambition of the screenwriters exceeded their talent.

reply

I thought the same. Would have been great if they had left it open for at least one character.

Some of the dialogue between the two Chucks was fun. Something like, "Come on, Chuck, this will go on forever. You know what lousy shots we are!" and "Careful, brother, you know how much we hate heights!"
