Why did robots want to take over the world?

I got the impression that Futureworld was entirely run by robots ....Why would they want to run the world and what for?

It's not like they need food, money, wealth or power they're freaking robots.

reply

I think it was because they realized that to protect themselves they needed to control humanity. Human history is full of battles against "the Other" and the robots were about as "the Other" as you could get. Also resources committed to waging war would be resources that could not be used to improve Delos.

To Take Over the World!

Now listen here, you mugs, nobody gets to say 'Meh' anymore unless you're Edward G. Robinson, see?

It wasn't the robots it was the Men who controlled them.

reply

They didn't seem like they were under anyone's control. Or did I miss a scene?

reply

The evil BIG SHOTS were attempting to place robots in place of World leaders in order to control the World.

Ah... The "I want to take over the world" plot

As opposed to...what? The old "I want to plan and execute an elaborate robbery plot?" That works better for you?

It's not a bad plot device at all, actually. Replacing world leaders with clones under your control.

But, that's the thing. Were the robots really under anyone's control? We were told that these were living, thinking beings that had real tissue from the original host. They could think and learn for themselves.

Maybe it started as a few humans controlling an army of robots, but the robots figured out how to replace their masters with more robots. We did see that one of the masters was actually a robot. Maybe they all were.

The robots had been advanced to a point of close resemblance to human awareness. This was being directed ultimately by the chief scientist who I assume was human but for whatever reason thought that he could rationally control human populations through android replacements. He was fixated on the idea, and probably had an authoritarian personality which favoured the idea of unwavering oppressive control of society.

Sounds just like the new POTUS LOL

They mention this in the film, the guy who Blythe Danner shoots says "we've worked out that you will destroy the planet in under a decade unless we intervene"... So with Fonda escaping I'm assuming Earth blew up in the early 80s.

Actually Futureworld was set in 1985.

I kinda like to think that the new Westworld series on HBO is a distant sequel.

You know what. Robots taking over the world might not be so bad considering there's a hand puppet now in the White House.

Was Schneider a robot? I figured it was an absolute power corrupts absolute sort of situation.
