I would agree with you, Cosmo111687, but the popular vote seems to remain acquiescent, so I will too.

So, stop wasting your time. :)

P. S. I have sent your name to the NASA scientists and they have yet to have decifered it's origin. Where did you get it?

Is this really a woody Allen movie?
It feels like a Woody Allen movie, but he supposedly did not write or direct it.
Perhaps there is another element to the front, that of Allen himself not being credited for the work. I might be speculating too much but it seems unlikely that the Allen-like dialogue and the films premise are all a coincidence.

I think the joke is on us.

kpbaca's theory is intriguing - so much so that it prompted me to register for this forum. I'm slapping my forehead wondering why it never ocurred to me before.

Yes, I'd say Allen wrote, or at least co-wrote, this film. The similarities really are too great for it to be just a coincidence. I dunno about the Director credit though - that seems to be taking things a bit far.

Bernstein's a front.

Give Bernstein a search

Bernstein's impeccable blacklisted credentials are not the point. I've just watched Midnight in Paris, where the Owen Wilson character quotes Hemingway's line to him - about American literature starting with Hucklebery Finn - the same line the bookseller in The Front says to Howard. IMO, Woody wrote both.

BTW, "academical" is my front.

I'm partial to Annie myself.

Haven't seen too many Allen films, and almost none of his classics (I know, for a supposed movie buff, this is bad), but I do know that some of his most recent work (e.g. the terrible Small Time Crooks, but also Everyone Says I Love You, Alice, Shadows and Fog) hasn't really made me a fan yet. However, I found this film the best I've seen so far by Woody. Maybe because the younger Woody was more bearable than the older one? Or because he hasn't written or directed this? Good, believable story, a Woody in control of his tics, fine humor mixed with the dramatic content... Call this one the best (with) Woody (in it) I've seen so far. Time to work on Annie Hall, Manhattan, Husbands and Wives, Sleeper, etc.

I can't believe that many genuine Allen fans don't rate Small Time Crooks highly. I can understand bad reviews from people on these boards who are clearly closet Nazi's and whose opinions on Allen stem from there, but the real people amaze me.

I think this is Allen on top comic form. The whole concept is so mad and brazenly played out; the way the movie refuses to exhaust itself as a crime caper and moves effortlessly in a whole new direction, building the humor all the way. Even with Tracy Ullman on top form, though, actress Elaine May, as May, steals it with some help from Woody's lines:

Old Guy at Party: You remind me of my departed wife. The way you carry yourself across the room.

May (Pause/Confused): You can't carry yourself across the room. It's physically impossible.

All times favourites? Has to be any order because it depends on mood:

Radio Days
Stardust Memories
Sleeper
Zelig
Annie Hall
Match Point
The Purple Rose Of Cairo
Love And Death

(actually I could go on!) Merry Xmas! I'm out of here!

"I can't believe that many Allen fans don't rate Small Time Crooks highly".

THANK YOU! It's an excellent film indeed. I haven't seen it for a while but what about Ray's clothes when he showed the TV crew around the cookie factory? Wasn't he in some hilarious, ungodly melange of brown, yellow and bright blue? "The horror...the horror".
Small Time Crooks should be shown as a double bill with Casino and the viewers should be supplied with sick bags for when they gaze in (Springtime-for-Hitler's audience-style) shock at DeNiro and Allen's character's fashion calamities.

(in no order)Annie Hall, Sweet & Lowdown(underrated), Crimes And Misdemeanors, Zelig, Manhattan, Sleeper, Husbands & Wives, Wildman Blues(Doc. about Woody's tour in Europe w/ his band), Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask, Mighty Aphrodite.

I can really say I like all of his movies accept "Curse of the Jade Scorpion & Celebrity(Branaugh did a terrible impersonation of Allen. In interviews Allen has said he didn't want him to act like he would have, but after a while it was too late. I don't know if I can blame Allen for that, but it was just so annoying being a huge fan of Allen watching someone do a lame impersonation).

Guys, as a fan of Woody's work, here are his best films:

Love and Death
Anything Else
Crimes and Misdemeanors

Bottom line is, to me most of his movies are just pure enjoyment, but all of them where he doesn't play are tasteless, boring and seem artificial somehow.
