HATED THE ENDING (Spoilers)

Just watched it for the first time thru Amazon streaming. Loved the first ¾'s of the movie but the ending sucked. When they fell in love you could really see the real life love that Ireland & Bronson shared. They are both fine actors, but you could see in their eyes and in their voices that this was REAL love that went beyond acting. A Charles Bronson generally happy and smiling was a site to see. I mean how many times do you ever see him smile in any of his movies?

And to have Ireland die and Bronson "go mad" was sad on multiple levels. First, it was just a sad ending to the movie. This was true love. Imagine if the same type of thing had occurred in a movie like The Princess Bride or When Harry Met Sally. Would everyone be saying " Oh no you just don't get it, the ending is what "made" the movie?" I don't think so. It was just a plain sad ending. Period. I watch movies to be entertained, this ending did not entertain me, it bummed me out.

Second, I was really saddened by the correlation between the film ending and the way the two stars died in real life. Bronson died of Alzheimer's, which means he essentially lost his mind and in the movie he's locked up for bing mad. Jill Ireland died way too young at 54 of breast cancer and in the movie her character dies "In the bloom of life" by suicide, both tragic ways to die.

The film deaths/endings were as sad as their real life endings and having been given a glimpse of the real life happiness the two shared only to see the tragic finale was almost unbearable. I don't think I'll be watching this movie again which is too bad because I really loved most of it. I guess I'm too much of a romantic.

It was 1976. Many of the 70s movies had depressing endings (think Electra Glide in Blue, etc.). it was a sign of the times when movies were not for enjoyment but to constantly remind us of how bad life was. Unless you were a flower child. I just saw this on ThisTV and had missed the very beginning, but when I came here and I was not surprised it was made in 1976. It's why I hate anything to do with the 70s, it was the tin age of movies. Today it would not be made cause we are the happy, lucky generation (actually I'm 73 so the current generation). So grab a Starbucks and take out your cell phone. All is well.
