3 stars is a travesty.

Used to love this as a kid and just watched it again. I can't believe how low people have rated this, this is the definition of an amazing midnight-type movie. It's very well-made for what it is, and some of it is fairly disturbing (this is PG?). I loved the rat sound effects, and the special effects on the whole. Some of it is really obvious (especially the matte shots) but I'll take this over crappy CGI any day of the week.

If you had any idea what kind of movie this was before watching it, what on Earth were you expecting? Why do I get the feeling that many people who gave this one star drink up the terrible dialog in movies like Star Wars like as if Lucas was god's gift to cinema?

I agree with you completely on this!! I love ALL of Bert Gordon's films---"Empire of the Ants", "The Spider"(which is one of his earliest, but eerie nonetheless), "Village of the Giants"--and then my absolute favorite, "The Beginning of the End", with Peter Graves-they have style, panache, some wit, and best of all----THEY HOLD MY ATTENTION!!! I can put one of these in, late at night, and be thoroughly entertained. Much moreso than with a lot of the stuff that's been coming out lately. Mind you, I'm a fan of a lot of the current horror stuff, but some of it's just god-awful, and you're correct on the CGI stuff----I'll take a guy with knobby knees in a chicken outfit anyday!! But Bert I. Gordon's stuff will always be on top of my list----he was extremely creative!!

I'm also a fan of good bad horror movies. I just rewatched it because it's on the Bottom 100 Extended list I made. The reason it's rated low is just for the directing and editing and writing, and some of the special effects (see above) were just a little too fake. The giant rats were pretty good.

The acting is not bad considering. I hope Miss Ida Lupino had fun. Another experienced director (not monster movies though) on the set, but I assume she kept her mouth shut.

I gave it a 10 out of 10. I thought it was an extremely fun movie to watch. The characters were great, the acting was great, I really liked the giant rat effects. It was a blast. Bert I. Gordon is a genius filmmaker and I have never seen a movie of his that I didn't enjoy.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

Agree on all points! Just rated it 7 to help out...

I gave it a six, fun movie. My only real complaint is, why would a man take his very pregnant wife on a camping trip in the middle of nowhere?

They used to show this all the time on TBS.

I'm a B.I.G. fan, but this wasn't one of his better efforts. The story had potential, and the special effects are quite good (I even have a soft spot for the "Attacking Chicken" scene) but the acting and pacing are uneven. I rate it a 5/10, a solid endeavour. I am looking forward to watching the commentary that is included with the recent Shout Factory release.
