Animal Cruelty?

First off, I am not a PETA psychopath or anything like that. I hold little regard for people who are more worried about animal suffering than the suffering of man. That being said, I was wondering about the rat drowning scene at the end. Does anyone know if those were really rats being drowned? It was one of the only effects in the whole movie that looked real. I also noticed there was no disclaimer about " no animals being harmed". Just an observation.

whoa they might of killed those rats for real!!!

The rats were not shot by pellet guns, they were shot by paint balls. I'm sure they got stunned or knocked out, but not killed. As for the drowning scene, it does look like some of them died. If you watch closely, you can see a rat floating dead on the water. Also the electrice fence scene when the rats run back you can see some dead rats laying on the ground. These are real, not models.

you're allowed to kill rats...their pest....people are far the most allowed kill such animal, because if they overrun your house they will have to kill them anyway.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

But these rats weren't 'pests'..they weren't over running someone's home (in reality)..nor were they spreading germs. They are rats specially bred to appear in films and the makers of this film had no right to electrocute or drown any of them for the sake of this crap third rate film...there are laws against that kind of thing.

The scenes under water at the end with the rats drowning..it was so obvious that those rats were in a glass tank and were being poked or prodded to remain under water...it was unbeleivably cruel and unnecessary

The people who are offended by the killing of the rats in this movie better avoid Cannibal Holocaust at all costs.

"PETA psychopath?" If you actually know what those letters stand for hopefully you think it's a good cause.
I love cheesy horror movies more than anything and I was so loving this one until they started shooting the rats. It made me uncomfortable. I don't think there is ever an excuse to deliberately cause harm and pain to a living creature.
And we call them "animals?" Look at us and ask yourself who the savages are?

reply

There are some psychopaths at PETA. They threaten to harm hunters, they throw buckets of paint on people wearing fur, they blow up Macdonalds in Europe. Hunting, wearing fur, and Macdonalds restaurants are legal things but PETA people think they are right and the hell with the law. Psychopaths.

The animal world is the most violent existence there is.

haha theres psychopaths in every group but i do believe that animals should not be treated like dirt or abused.. you think its cool for a person to abuse a dog?????

Actually, these were the rats that lived under my garage. Believe me, I'm glad they're gone and I don't care how they met their demise.

Actually, these were the Rats of NIMH. Mrs Frisby was the one Marjoe shoots in the face. Ben and Socrates also make cameos early on.

Lord, this movie was made over 30 years ago. I wouldn't worry about it now.

well if it were done today (a remake is in the works) you wouldn't have been able to kill a wasp, large or otherwise without someone having a cow, large or otherwise. back in 76 I don't think the treatment of animals were as carefuly monitored as they are today.

I saw this movie once a few years back and was horrified

I don't think they used paintballs on those rats. For one thing, paintballs are huge compared to a rat. But more importantly, there were rats who clearly had portions of their heads blown off.

I haven't seen it recently so I won't swear by it, but I specifically recall my alarm at seeing portions of their heads getting shot OFF, not "painted red"

I'm not a PETAholic either, BTW. Just someone who's owned a domesticated rat as a pet. They're about as far away in temperament from feral rats as you can imagine, and it's a fair bet that domesticated rats were the ones being used in this film (no one would reasonably risk working with wild rats)

Yeah, just watched it today and they definitely killed a lot of rats in this movie. A lot of older movies harm animals without a doubt. And fit the folks that think just because it's a rat it's not a big deal. Your idiots. It's the same as killing a dog because you have too many. But they would probably think that wasn't a big deal, either.

reply

I felt bad for them. :( towards the end I became frazzled wondering if they killed the Rats for real. Not sure about actually shooting them. Hearing them scream in the water was depressing.

On the trivia it says stock footage and mechanical Rats were used but some looked pretty damn real.

reply

If they were trained rats they didn't carry any germs so they didn't have to be killed for entertaining, specially for this kind of movie. So your post is really stupid.

And yes stupid people are also part of the human race as far as you're concerned.

I saw this on Apple TV years ago and it was one of the first horror films I watched, but I'm not completely sure I can watch it again cuz those drown rats looked freaking real.
