He had to have had the shortest airtime in this movie then any movie I've ever seen with him in. No explanation whatsoever as to what happened to his character after being dropped off at the cabin.

Agreed. McDowell was wasted in a nothing bit role.

Maybe that part was in the script but was cut due to time and/or budget restraints. As a matter of fact, the whole flood climax at the end seemed rushed and poorly staged. The fact that it all happened at night may indicate budgeting problems and last minute cuts.
