Those of you Familiar With San Francisco

How far would TD and CE have run during the chase scene if it had been done as it happened and in one take? Consider the leaping tall buildings and stair climbing, also.

Yes, I know it was probably done over several days with stand-ins as needed.

Made me tired just watching, but closeups of Inspector Moore running reinvigorated me, if you know what I mean.

I'm curious how many rooftops they could cross in San Francisco without having to cross a street?

I live in San Francisco and if you've never been, it's extremely congested. There is very little green space and this includes spacing between buildings be they residential or commercial. In the areas where the bulk of the Dirty Harry movies are filmed, structures are built right next to each other. They don't share side walls, but the side walls of each building are built right up against the other structure. In most parts of the city, there are no side yards or ways to get to the back of the building from the front without going through the building or around the block to an alley (if any). In some areas there are blocks of free standing buildings with walkable perimeters, but specific to filming areas (the Mission, North Beach, Tenderloin, Civic Center, SOMA, parts of the FIDI and Marina etc.) it's more rare. It's entirely feasible to walk the length of an entire block and not have a gap between buildings. Obviously it also depends on the structure. Victorians have peaked roofs and Edwardians have flat ones. Since these different designs coexist next to each other it may be feasible to walk across the roofs, but not very safe or easy.

I have visited the bay area and it's congested for sure- but a great place to vacation. Yes, there are numerous areas where houses, buildings, shops are joined together. Watch some of the old episodes of The Streets of San Francisco and you'll get an idea (if you gave never visted there). I'd love to go back for a vacation.

Remember that Jimmy Stewart did some roof-jumping as a cop in Vertigo - that is, until that one tragic incident that gave him a fear of heights.....

Callahan would probably have been a rookie cop about that time....would have been interesting to have Stewart reprise his Vertigo role in one of the DH films (albeit retired as he already was in Vertigo).
