Colonel Pitts does a Custer

Any half competent officer would gather intelligence on an enemy before mounting an attack. Colonel Pitts makes a reckless headlong charge without any idea of where the Germans are in other words, a Custer. He even dismisses the suggestion from a junior officer to do just that.

Needless to say, his men are picked off by Steiner's battle hardened paratroopers. Steiner had by 1943, fought in Norway and on the brutal Eastern Front. Pitts' troops were relatively green by comparison. Being led by an incompetent officer who dreams of glory, medals and statues is a surefire way to get killed.
