Disappointing battle sequence...

The book's battle sequence was so much better than the movie.

In the movie, the Americans charge and get massacred. No German cashualties. Thats understandable though, it was an ambush.

When the Americans attack again, they sustain no casualties but all the Germans are killed. NOT REALISTIC AND NOT GOOD FOR THE GERMAN PARATROOPER'S CHARACTERS.
The Germans are supposed to be a veteran Paratrooper unit, professionals. And to put on a poor show of defence is disappointing. But thats just me.

This deserves a remake. Somewhat.
Maybe the remake could turn out to be as good as 'The Rock.'
And no, not the absent-minded wrestler. The movie starring Nick Cage and Sean Connery.

Agreed, the battle sequences were the worst of th emovie, while it had good acting, it laked in the action department...

A remake would be good, but who could replace the awesom Duvall, Caine and Sutherland? You must admit that The acting was the best of the movie had to offer...

I'm glad others noticed this also. In the first battle they wiped out the attacking Americans without breakin a sweat. In the second battle they pretty much sit still and wait to get killed. In the second battle they were trying to buy time for Steiner so I thought they would show greater effort.
Not very well done by the film makers.

Folks, your missing something very important regarding the battle scenes. The first one where the Americans were easily wiped out, was because of the character played by Larry Hagman who was very untested and sloppy. After that battle, the second American in command regrouped and went back and did it right. In fact if you recall the character played by Michael Caine said when the second American commander began the second attack Caine says "there back, and unfortunatly for us this American seems to know his business". Wanted to point that out. Surprised you all missed that very relevant fact and statements.

Correctamundo! There was supposed to be a striking difference between the Col. Hagmans efforts and Treat Williams'character's assault. Also, remember that when Williams came in, he came in "dressed to hunt bear." He had at least 2/3 battalion of US Rangers, who were also elite troops, armed with a scout car w/ quad mount and bazookas. I believe this was the author's "fantasy match up,' having the elites of 2 nations duke it out.

I was rather impressed by the battle sequence in that it was one of the few times in cinema where battle scenes are geographically consistent with the story. What I mean is that in most war films you only see small tight shots of the battle areas, with no idea of where once action sequence is (geopraphically) in relation to another. In EHL, the audience has a reasonable mental "view" of the layout of the town.

BTW: trivia: anyone know why it was important for Steiner to insist the Paratroopers have their German Uniforms under the british outfits?

reply

According to the Geneva conventions, a soldier wearing either civilian or the military uniform of another country may be considered a spy and is not subject to the rules of war protecting the rights of soldiers who surrender or are captured; this may mean execution, torture, denial of medical aid, food etc.

At least since the Napoleonic wars wearing the uniform of another country was a death sentence if captured.

Rob_Smith , you said

You used the expressions 'as good as' and 'The Rock' in the same sentence...
You must be joking, no?

What do you mean, funny? Funny how?

Yes, the Fallschirmjäger were pretty damned good fighters... although it's set after Mussolini's 'rescue' so by then the Fallschirmjäger's were running around in Panthers... now THAT would have been an interesting para-drop, and subsequent battle :)
