How realistic was this movie? How does it stack up against other historical epics?

Forget historical epics - pick up a book or Google "slavery" and see for yourself how realistic it was. Happy slaves are a myth - they were chained and beaten (as in this movie) for a reason

You know if all that were true the American Civil war wouldn't have lasted a year

Considering the kind of language thrown around today, this could be a modern movie. Read some messageboards (or some Facebook timelines) or have some chats with people and you'll see/hear they talk the same way.
