Some thoughts on Love House

Watching it again tonight, almost thirty five years after the first time I saw it,as a kid,I am amazed at the number of elements it borrows from other quite well-known films. Some films/plays that immediately come to mind are "Rebecca", "Laura", "Harlow","The legend of Lylah Clare","Bluebeard","Valentino","Phantom of the Opera","Evita" even (the mummified body in public display idea). Also, some themes and story lines from Billy Wilder's "Fedora", shot one year later, and "Sunset Boulevard", are similar to "Death at Love House".

I can see the comparisons but the movie more than anything owes a debt to WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE and HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE with it atomsphere, particularly in casting classic era actresses (Dorothy Lamour, Sylvia Sidney, Joan Blondell) and "house with a personality of it's own" setting. It's very much a 1960's grande dame "horror"/thriller film, albeit gentler for 70's television.

No, it isn't.
