Will this movie ever be released in DVD for the US?

I can only find the DVD for region 2 online. I wonder if any of you have any idea if this movie will be released here in the US?

reply

No. You have to buy a multiregional DVD player. I've long grown tired of finding the region 1 dvds of some of my favourite Italian directors.

Last film seen: Robert Bresson's Pickpocket - Brilliant!

It's baffling why "Casanova" hasn't been released on DVD. Are there any problems with the rights? I believe there was a VHS and even a Laser Disc in the past. Many years ago a local video store was selling an extremely limited amount of DVDs of this movie transfered from the few VHS copies they had of it. Quickly after this, the VHS copies sold out, then the DVDs sold out, and eventually the store closed. I was lucky enough to buy one. The quality is fair, but not excellent. At least it's watchable. If not for this chance encounter at a random neighborhood store, I wouldn't have it at all. Lets hope that by being a Fellini film, a DVD is being considered. It would only be fair.

I agree. This would make a great Criterion title, given their history with the director's previous works. Try writing to them and suggest this.

I have written to the Criterion folks twice suggesting this to them. I believe there is some problem with ownership of the movie. I think it's one of his very best (and also frustratingly paced!) films he has made.

Just bought the British released DVD and, although the extra features on disc two are impressive, the overall look is really messy and lowres. Not horribly lowres... it's a bit better than the vhs tapes that were so dark you couldn't see anything. But here things tend to be over-exposed and look like they were pushed visually. It's very grainy and has the look of a tape master. A bit disappointed am I. The good thing though... my laptop didn't have to shift regions to play it!
