What Ugly People!

Fellini must have gone to extreme lenghts to cast some of the ugliest people in this movie. What wrinkles, what rotten teeth, what dried-up faces, what paleness, what sharp noses, what thinness! And then that exaggerated make-up, those ridiculous wigs! What a grotesque procession of characters! Fellini has outdone himself with this movie.

I read an article about this film before its release, and it stated that there was a casting agency in England named "Uglies, Unltd." or something along those lines. The author stated that Fellini also cast some of their clients in other films. I don't recall the exact words, but the article suggested that Fellini saw the character of these authentic "uglies" as an artistic addition to the film, and that he selected them as individuals, not as a lot of random extras. So, truly, he sought to cast ugly people, but he didn't have to search that hard for them.

Take a look at paintings from that time! people were ugly in general even from royal families. To hide most of their illness they used tons of white powder. In that sense Fellini portrays a reality for that time.

singjohn,

You just took the words out of my mouth. Partway through the movie, all I could think about was how he looked like a drag queen. I even thought they should have cast Caitlyn Jenner in the role. Just kidding!

Regardless, I still think Sutherland gave a very good performance.
