Camera Trick?

Question for someone with the dvd -

At about 35:14 there's a shot where Stefano is climbing the stairs in the house he's staying at. There's a very subtle effect that looks like the walls are breathing around him - the part of the wall nearest to the camera goes in and out of focus, the window behind him appears to shift in its frame, even though the camera's position appears to remain the same. Anyone else notice this, and if so, anyone know how it's done?

On 6 May 1976 an exceptionally strong earthquake hits the Friuli region, leaving nearly a thousand dead, and other thousands injured, while damaging homes, industry and infrastructures.

reply

Yes, there was an earthquake, but I don't think that's what Cruel_World is talking about. I think you would have heard a screaming crew and seen the actor run for cover if it had hit at that moment.

That was a very creepy, weird effect, whatever it was. Almost as it were filmed through a quivering funhouse mirror. I think I've seen similar techniques in Lynch films. Maybe someone with the requisite technical knowledge can venture a guess.

My guess is that these "special effects" are in fact compression artefacts on the DVD, to me it looked more like a technical fault than some artistic effect intended by the director.

the dvd extras confirms that it was an earthquake.

It is an mpeg artifact. I suspect there are not enough bits for this long movie with many audio tracks including a DTS one. It is licensed from 20th century fox Italy and I have another Avati movie from them, Zeder, and it has the same artifacts where a wall in the background viewed through a square arch is moving within the frame. It seems they used the same mpeg encoder and had the same thing happen. I also noticed when they show a shot of a lot of water moving you can see those block artifacts.

It's a pretty surreal and disorienting effect. Certainly adds to the atmosphere of the film.

"It's more dirty laundry for you and your goons!"

Pretty sure it's just a dodgy set with unsteady walls. The crew and actor are making it wobble slightly. If the earthquake thing is true then I guess that would be a reason to make the walls shake!
