Why would anyone live like Carrie's mother?

I know she may be an extreme example of this kind of religion, but I guess many people live like this, god-fearing, seeing sin in absolutely everything natural in life and turning to the Bible for every little thing, and with prayer being almost the sole activity in the household. I can only guess that they want to go to heaven and avoid hell at any cost, but it's really not a way to live, is it? I mean, living your life thinking you'll be damned for eternity for the slightest mistake, only to find nothing happens after death. No-one knows what happens after death, and I personally don't think it will involve what I described above for Christianity, seeing as there are hundreds of other religions on the planet with beliefs about the afterlife.

I'm just saying, enjoy your life without any worry about after death, and live and make the most of every day as if it were your last.

She's really emotionally unstable. She is very deluded and views the entire world in black & white, regarding it as full of sin to cope with her the misfortunes of her life. I don't think she had a real basis for being a religious fanatic, considering that she makes up random crap a lot of the time. She just uses religion as a feel-good excuse to prove her deluded viewpoints. She was at the point where she needed psychiatric help.

I suppose so, yes.

reply

YES.

My mother was like this. When I was a kid, I wrote it off as, "She's just religious/superstitious." As it turned out, she probably was an undiagnosed schizophrenic.

reply

Ask a catholic nun. That's how they live their lives.

Carrie's mom is a strawman (rather "straw-woman") set up by Stephen King because he hates Christianity. Carrie's mom became the first in a long line of crazy Christian strawmen dreamed up by atheist novelists and screenwriters for audiences to point to and exclaim "See? Christianity is bad!"

reply

So does that mean the whole town is atheist? Because both the novel and the film make it quite clear everyone hates Margaret White. King was not trying to say all Christians are like that, just one of his characters was an extremist and was clearly in the minority just like they are in our world.

The mother seemed quite simple minded. Simple minded people do not know how to deal with certain influences that require a fair amount of thought. Christianity is a fairly complex institution if someone is trying to learn all the nuances of it. The rage of the age for me which coincides with the release of this movie was album rock. Not that I used it to explain all things in life but I knew a lot of people that did. A few people were fairly adept at it while most sounded like simple minded morons.

She was mentally ill . I know people that are hyper religious and they don’t act anything like that.
