did tommy genuinely like her?
Opinions?
Edit to add my opinion. I think he did. He seemed to really start falling for her and really started liking her more than his real girlfriend.

Yes, but not in a serious romantic way.
IMHO, Tommy comes to realize Carrie is basically a sweet person and not the weirdo her peers assumed her to be. He was having a genuinely good time with her at the prom, but unlike the book, I don't see any evidence he was falling for her.
This is a faithful saying...Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

I thought he did fall for Carrie, it was implied in the kiss and how he gives a great smile while they dance and how he excitedly joins her in the stage. It was subtle but clear.

He really likes her in the book.
shareUmm, where in the book did it say that Tommy really liked her? He may have called her beautiful and thought she was genuinely pretty, but there is nothing to suggest that he had real feelings for her. Afterall, it was a big point in the book that the only reason why he asked out Carrie was his love for Sue, and to make her happy.
shareI think during their slow dance scene he was starting to feel like her protector (not that he knew what Chris and Co. were plotting) and I think there was a genuine camaraderie devleopling between Tommy & Carrie in this film that was lacking in the two remakes. It was more romantic than sexual, and we caught a glimpse of that during the poetry reading in English class. They were caught up in a whirlwind that wouldn't last!
