How to rig a bucket

When I first read the book and saw the movie in Jr. High, I went through this phase where I would fill a bucket with water and use duct tape to tape a length of rope to the bottom and wrap it around the railing of my back deck, which was about 10 feet off the ground. Then, I'd tie another rope to the handle to pull and dump the water. I usually did this alone, just for the thrill of pulling a rope and dumping something. My friends and I did it to one another once or twice on hot summer days, too. But I'm pretty sure they didn't use Duct tape in the movies. Does anyone know how to rig a bucket like that for real? I assume you'd need to find a bucket that had a lip on the bottom and drill a hole to secure it to the platform (a rafter or whatever). But it seemed a lot more complicated than that in the movies (especially the 2002 & 2013 versions. Hell, 2013 used pulleys and what appeared to be a specially built contraption from which to suspend the bucket). Anyone know how they did it? I can't seem to find anything on Google. I don't even know what to type in the search bar, tbh.

In the movie, the bucket/pail has a handle, so it appears they tied the rope to one side of the handle (or the attachment which holds the handle on) then wrapped it around a rafter to keep it from being pulled down when the rope was pulled. The rope was also tied to the other side of the bucket and then brought down under the stage, so when they pulled it, that side would tip over and the bucket would remain hanging from the rafter...but as we know, it didn't hold.

This is a faithful saying...Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
