Relation to Cannonball Run?

I mean, c'mon, obvious plot relation..

But I haven't seen any comments about the connection between the two. Any notes on this? I like the old cool cars racing across 'merica genre, (Deathrace 2000, Smokey and the Bandit, etc.) and the name connection to the much more famous "Cannonball Run" is too easy.. but I don't see anything anywhere about the relationship..

Inspiration from this movie? ... or the real thing? heh..

I really don't know what the relationship between this movie and Cannonball Run might be... But I came to this message board wondering what the relationship beteen this movie and Dath Race 2000 are.

I just saw Death Race 2000 the other day and just learned about this movie and it sounds incredibly similar. Aside from both starring David Carradine, Cannonball also has a cameo with Sylvester Stallone who was the other star opposite Carradine in Dath Race.

I would think this movie was made off the popularity of Death Race 2000 and Cannonball Run came out of Cannonball.

Looks like all of the great racing movies were inspired by the Cannonball races in 1973-1976. Cannonball! took the drama approach, while Gumball Rally was the comedy. Both were released in 1976, but it seems that comedy has won the day with this genre.

Cannonball came out in 1976, as did Gumball Rally. Cannonball Run was released in 1981.

In the DVD special features, David Carradine claims that they were the first with Cannonball and the others came after. Obviously Hal Needham's Cannonball Run was later. David Carradine says they even stole the name of the movie.

Personally, I like them all. Good car movies.

In 1933 legendary motorcycle racer Mister Baker, had crossed the United States coast-to-coast in 54 hours, earning him the nickname Cannonball. He had had an annual race ever since 1914 (when he needed 11 days), and bettered his time ever since. In the 1970s motor journalist Brock Yates of Car and Driver magazine had started the Cannonball Baker Sea To Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in honor of Cannonball. This is the related website.
www.gumball-3000.com In the 70s Yates wrote a book and stories about his particiapaiton in the race.

You people aren't getting it. The above poster does.

The word "Cannonball" is not a movie name, it's the name of a real race, just like the word "Indy" or Nascar".

So the fact that there are several movies related to cross-country racing with the word "Cannonball" in it is moot... they're both about that style of race.

Get it now????

Not to mention this movie was from the same director as 'Death Race 2000'

Cannonball and Death Race 2000 were both directed by Paul Bartel and Cannonball producer Samuel F Gelfman co-produced Death Race 2000 with Roger Corman. Corman also runs New World Pictures which was one of the production companies and distributors on Cannonball. I am surprised Cannonball was not produced by Corman since it also has Corman regulars like David Carradine, who also starred in Death Race 2000, and has the classic Corman pace and action. Corman always delivered movies to suite his audience's interests and the mid-70's was obviously the era of the car chase, because in addition to Death Race 2000 Corman produced Eat My Dust, Moving Violation, Grand Theft Auto, Thunder and Lighting and other car chase movies. Roger Corman was also one of the producers of 2008's Death Race.

The link to Cannonball Run is different because the film makers are different, but both movies are based on the Cannonball Race described in an earlier comment. I have read that Brock Yates was upset that both Cannonball and Gumball Rally were based off of his race and were made without his input, so he decided to have his own version of the story made. He held another Cannonball Run in 1978 and wrote the screenplay for the Cannonball Run movie based on this race.

Cool.

They're both the same thing. However, "The Cannonball Run" was more of a humorous take on the novel and it's the most remembered by audiences. This version with david carradine was more on par with the novel.

Safari 3000 anyone? I've only seen parts of all these films but they all look very similar.
