Shouldn't Anthony James be a cult hero of sorts?

Considering the guy played one of the creepiest, scariest and thus one of the most unforgettable villians in motion picture history, shouldn't Anthony James have a cult following of sorts? Why isn't this fine actor making the rounds of horror conventions? You know a lot of horror fans would love to meet him. Or has he been approached about doing them and just declined? Anybody know?

I've wondered the same thing. I've often wanted to meet him to thank him for being the only character to scare the living crap out of me and give me nightmares for weeks when I first saw it as a kid. Last I heard of him he is painting and selling abstract art in Boston and Miami. He had some work at a gallery in Boston I was thinking of going to see but what are the chances he would actually be there? It was super expensive as well so I couldn't have afforded it anyway.

Amazing how the actor left a scar on so many people because he simply SMILED in this movie.

I agree with you. A chauffeur smiling actually being considered scary to someone sounds silly in theory, but when you watch the film and see the chauffeur, you can understand why they are afraid because he looks truly menacing.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.

He's always excelled in playing weirdos.....look at his character in "In the Heat of the Night".

I cannot even THINK of the scenes with him. I Googled the photo once just to see if it was as scary as I remembered as a kid.... and you bet your sweet ass it is!

He scared the bejesus out of me as a kid playing that creepy chauffeur but then years later he made me laugh my ass off when he sang that Barbra Streisand tune in naked gun. His face and voice were hilarious.

I don't think he should, he didn't particularly do anything to deserve that kind of status in terms of this movie (his other movies I dont much about), the creepiness of his character is owed much more to Dan Curtis knowing how to build atmosphere and giving an unsettling back story to the Chauffeur rather than anything Anthony James did. The scenes with him work as a whole because of how they are worked into the story but I never really got why people thought he did such a great job as an actor, all he did was did was smile. He was an odd looking guy which added too it but you could of cast any odd looking guy for that role and it would of worked just the same to me, it was more the music and direction that made it effective IMO.
