Nightmare inducing...

Saw this on the late show (probably "Creature Features") when spending teh night at a friend's when I was in junior high. Even though it is a fairly standard "peopel move into a haunted house and are too stupid to leave in time" movie, it is the scariest film I have ever seen.

The chaufers's creepy smile gave both of us nightmares for mionths after seeing it.

I wouldn't say that they are too stupid to leave. Nothing in the house is overtly happening. It's all gradual. It just seems like a few things are going wrong, the couple are drifting apart, Ben's nightmares are returning, etc. Nothing screams "haunted house" to them. When it does (the house literally repairing itself), Ben does try to escape and is practically thrashed by the living vegetation. The son wants to leave after the incident, but possessed Marion is in charge now.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

Yes, I can see why. This has a creepy enough atmosphere for about 4 horror movies. Everything about it is perfect to me.
