This film changed my opinion of Woody Guthrie

Going in, I basically liked him. I did not know him well but knew the broad outline of his place in history. And I knew some songs.

I know it's only quasi-related but I have been a fan of Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger and saw them in very enjoyable concerts way back when.

After the movie, I actively dislike Woody Guthrie and only hope the portrayal was not accurate. To me he came across as short-sighted, stupid, judgmental, selfish and unforgivably, unnecessarily cruel to his family. Basically a visionless, petulant child and a dick (who happened to write some respectable songs).

I'm not saying that makes it a bad movie. I am all for biopics that show the subject, warts and all. I am just surprised at what I see as a preponderance of warts versus the comments I have read which are so pro-Woody.

So that's my 2 cents.

Most people are when you actively examine their life. Especially artists.

The same pretty much happened to me when I took a 500 level biography writing class in college of which Woody was one of the subjects. As far as the accuracy of the movie, although many of the events and most of the characters outside Woody's immediate family are fictionalized, details are basically true in that Woody did not treat people well and his family often had a rough time of it. Woody was also a snob--judged people by where they were from and what they did (for instance if someone was born in a large city they couldn't sing folk songs, but if they were from a less populous area they were a "small town virgin," and anyone "college bred" was not "of the people"--and I was attending college while learning all this and actively playing Woody's music!) I also love Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger. I still listen to Woody's music and details about his life...would not have lived in the same place with him for anything! If I had to stop listening to certain music based on the performer's life, then Elvis, John Lennon, Woody Guthrie, and probably Michael Jackson would have to go straight out the window, and I've also heard things about John Denver. Those alone would put a huge dent in my collection!

I understand it but don't feel that way. The "artist" behavior is not to be made exccuses for but at least it's understandable given the history of big talents. The movie didn't sugarcoat things.
I have to say too it's a beautiful movie to look at and actually makes the Dustbowl look like something other than horrific.
