Short film

I really enjoyed the short film that comes with the DVD. Something to show your kids, yes it’s outdated but still SUPER relevant. Think for yourself and question why someone is doing something.

"Kids are to smart today they will never fall for it"

I thought the very, very end was lame, but I liked the whole concept of THE RINGER as a whole, and it really made me think.

I especially like how the old men were selling that rock band as being poor guys who borrow instruments from their fans, who record in the bathroom and "will record anywhere" and whose concerts allow their fans to sit on the carpet with them. That is SO how it was - and still is - with all the sixties and seventies bands, from dylan to the beatles to any other band, kids always think "they're stoners just like us" with their torn jeans, meanwhile those musicians are worth over a billion dollars. or john fogerty and john melloncamp being labelled as "blue collar" when theyre worth more than 100 million dollars. that aspect of the film i really enjoyed, the hypocricy of the rock promoters and tying it in with the nose ring and the drug worked pretty good too.

one of the actors who plays one of the old men plays a doctor in ANNIE HALL (who treats a young woody) and is also in DEATH WISH, so he got some good actors in it.

I really enjoyed the short film, but it annoyed me a bit that none of the actors got any credit, since I thought I recognized a few faces.. I think the black scumbag was also in "Take a Hard Ride", and I'm almost certain I've seen the sleazy record-producer somewhere too.. anyone got the cast-list?

reply

The black guy in 'The Ringer' was Charlie Mc Greggor who was in 'The French Connection' among other things. David Groh was the record guy who two years later bagged a part as a regular on 'Rhoda.'

reply

Yes exactly who I thought it was! Although I mainly remembered McGregor from "Take a Hard Ride", where he had quite a memorable part.

You sure about the other guy being David Groh? I thought he looked more sleazy-like.. do you have any other cast-member information? The movie could actually have it's own IMDb-site, being so well-made and influential, its just that not much is known about it. I'd love to learn more!

I do know of another cast member... me! I'm the guy who buys the drugs from David Groh, (me at 24 that is) that's how I'm so sure it's him. Oh.. I also wrote and directed it ;)

Wow! I didn't know you checked the IMDb message-boards for stuff about your own movies, not many people tend to do that (as far as I know).

But if you have all this background information about The Ringer (sponsored by Pepsi, which I found to be most amusing), then why not add it to the IMDb? I saw it on the Danish DVD for "Blue Sunshine", so it's widely available to the public and should have its own page by now :)

I quite enjoyed Blue Sunshine by the way, and also wrote a 600 word review of it too (in Danish though).. many great performances in that movie, and a very creative story. Loved the cameo by the late great Brion James too, and the fact that you gave him his big break (as you say on the commentary track).

Jerry Zipkin: If you jerk, it won't work!

reply

I check the imdb for Blue sunshine periodically because there's always talk about a remake so it's nice to see people still talking about it and what they have to say. Far as a seperate page for The Ringer, I don't even know how to start a page. They just seem to appear but I do suppose someone puts them up there. I'll look into it. Man, never thought that little short film would have a second life after so many years!

reply

Well, anyone can create a page for a movie, but the IMDb staff probably prefers either a producer/director/writer or publicists/agents to do it.. I could do it for you perhaps, but I'd need a lot of info, which I don't have access to.

You can just follow this link: http://imdb.com/updates?update=title. This should take you directly to the new title-adding page. Hope to see The Ringer up there soon! :)

If you want to update a title on IMDB, you must put as much links as you can that pruve that title exists. That's the key.

Glad to see you here tenfour.
