"They must all be destroyed"

One scene always confused me ever since I saw this as a kid. After Innes' initial escape from the city he runs into the character played by Grant who takes him back into the tunnels to view the Meha's chamber. They attack those three women that were hypnotized, but all you really see is one of them being carried away by the shoulders, and you hear some screaming. It then cuts to Innes looking especially shocked and at that point he commits to taking them down.

Was something cut from this scene? Is something more implied? It just doesn't seem like a logical stretch, since the creatures aren't any MORE bloodthirsty than the ones encountered up to this point. This has always bothered me.

The censors of that time wouldn't allow for any excessive scenes of dismembering that would have occurred in a bird attack upon prey. It would have gotten an R-rating and then a movie intended for all-viewing would not be so.
