Is this movie like The Warriors? In the sense of overall tone and style of action?

Yes, actually. Very similar in style, tone, and even musical score. This movie is like a mixture of the plot to Night of the Living Dead with the gritty style of The Warriors.

Both films feature highly unrealistic multi-ethnic gangs.

It definitely was. The Death Wish movies did it too!

"The Warriors" has that fantasy element to it. So, I think you buy it more easily in that movie.

Also, both movies have great electronic film scores. "The Warriors" is by Barry De Vorzon, and I think it's his best.

I think that "The Warriors" is a lot better, but that could be just me. "Assault" is still a good low-budget actioner. Even early on, Carpenter showed that he had what it took as a filmmaker.
