40th Anniversary

This movie opened in American theaters on Friday, November 5, 1976, and this Saturday was its fortieth anniversary. I'm actually two days late in making this post, as I forgot on Saturday when I was at this library. And I do feel bad about that, as this movie is my 20th favorite of all time (my second favorite John Carpenter one after Halloween) and has been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it in August, 1983. I was 15 then and about to begin 10th grade, and our mother agreed to buy three movies on VHS for me, and three for my sister from a video store in Spartanburg, SC. One of the ones I chose WAS Halloween, and I decided to also get Assault on Precint 13, though I had never seen it, because I had seen all of John Carpenter's other movies and really liked them, so figured I'd like this one just as much. I then watched it on our VCR right after getting it, and was actually a little disappointed with it and did not like it as much as I thought I would that first time, but watched it numerous times later in the eighties and then really liked it, just as much as his other movies (I guess I just had to get used to it). I continued to watch it occasionally on VCRs until our 1997 move, but then became homeless until 2010 and had no way to watch it all those years. I then got an apartment and TV and dvd player that September and began buying alot of movies on dvd to watch from various stores, including this one, which I brought from a video and music store in 2011. I've watched it several times since then, and still like it as much as ever, and think I'll watch it again one night this week for this anniversary.

In addition, its two lead characters, Ethan Bishop and Napolean Wilson, became my 2nd and 3rd favorite movies characters in 1983 when I first saw it, which they have remained ever since (behind only Roger Moore's James Bond).

Can't believe I just watched this for the first time, despite Carpenter being my favorite director. Think I was afraid I would not like it, but I was grinning like a little kid the whole time. It's definitely going to the top of my list of Carpenter favorites.

Glad you could finally enjoy one of your favorites again.

Watching the 40th Anniversary Blu Ray last night. I had seen it before, but I loved catching the moment where Austin Stoker flinches when Tony Burton spins round with his gun aimed at him during the scene where they are talking Wells out of running out on them.

I also love Napoleon Wilson's occasional looks of mild annoyance in the face of their predicament. Like he's watching his teenage kid try to awkwardly reverse the car into the garage.
