WILL THIS EVER BE RELEASED ON VHS/DVD?

I am a 17 year old Bergman/Ullmann fanatic. I've most every one of their movies, except for this one. Does anyone have any word on if this will ever be released on VHS or DVD in the near future?

Just got it in the mail for $13 plus S&H. It comes up as DVD-V on my player. SuperHappyFun.com rates the quality 8 out of 10 but I think it's closer to 5. It was taped from an old VHS tape and the video is a bit jittery and soft. But the subtitles/sound are clear enough. Since I've seen no plans for Paramount to release it, this is better than nothing if you are a fan of Bergman/Ullman/the film like I am.

Here in Germany it is also very diffucult to get a copy of this film!
But (thank god) i found a copy in my video store, so I rented it and made a copy for me!
It is just a wonderful movie!

I'd really like to see this released in the full TV format length compromising of 4 episodes.

Criterion released Scenes From A Marriage like that, so maybe there is a chance they will do the same with Face to Face.

That's fantastic if it's true. Has it been confirmed by Criterion?

reply

It's supposedly part of Criterion's deal with Paramount. Hope it's true.

reply

Well, here it is Jan 2011 and it's STILL not on DVD! But I noticed that Netflix has a "coming soon" next to it for streaming.

reply

I saw that too but then they removed it!!!

reply

It shows as SAVE...not sure what you saw as far as streaming. I guess it will go in the neverending pile of SAVEs

reply

Well usually if you have a film saved in your queue it will list a date as to when it's coming to instant stream if it's within a month. Sometimes if they announce it earlier it will be marked as "coming soon" but Netflix has removed that entirely.

Looks like I'm stuck with you with that neverending pile of saves!

reply

Ive come to learn that Netflix never really deletes anything so SAVE either means they had it at one time or they plan to have it in the future...and since I dont think this has ever been on DVD then that must mean they anticipate it... lets keep our fingers crossed...

I have a very organized system when it comes to Netflix. I have another profile that I set aside only for SAVES that way theyre not taking up room in my normal queue. I access it every few days and just scroll down the whole thing to see if there are any dates and of course youd notice right away if one got shot up to the normal queue. The only thing I cant tell is if it ever becomes available for streaming and NOT DVD because since the queue isnt set up for streaming, it wont tell me that unless I hover over every one of them. Still this prevents me from manually checking 300 titles every so often.

I hope that is true. I'd really like to see it, and I really don't want to see a crappy VHS copy if I can avoid it.

reply

I sincerely hope it's true. I can't wait to see this on DVD - perhaps the whole miniseries.

Make it FIVE years now.

There are films that are already in their SECOND BLU-RAY Release !!!

It's maddening !

reply

A few days ago this movie has been finally released on DVD here in Germany.

reply

The German DVD has German subtitles only (like most releases in that country), which makes it pretty much inaccessible to most of Europe - and the rest of the world.

In the meantime, this could tide ya over:

reply

Unfortunately, it's been removed. Dammit! I'm like everyone else here; I really want to see this film, and am frustrated that it's not available in the U.S. I wish Criterion would get on the ball here.

reply

Well, if you buy the german DVD, you can maybe make your own subtitles or look for them somewhere??

I just saw the film, and it is absolutely stunning!! This has to be released by criterion!! The colors are even more beautiful than those in PASSION, the dream sequences are as haunting as those in VARGTIMMEN (my personal favorite) and the acting is outstanding!! 10/10 for sure!! I was absolutely shocked at times, with tears shooting into my eyes.

I think bergman himnself tried to keep it off circulation: he felt that while the inspiration and the ideas had been good and Ullmann ahd been great in her role, the film had become tilted over by artistic confusion on his own part. He says so in retrospect, in Images I think. He could be very negative, sometimes unreasonably so, at his own films. So that would explain why there were almost nop chances to see it again during his last thirty years. I've seen snatches of it in some documentary and it's not a bad film I guess.

Just what kind of a *beep* president are you anyway? Everybody wants you assassinated!

reply

Strausszek,

Help me out here. Why did Bergman think of the film "The Road to Morocco" with Crosby, Lamour and Hope when he viewed Face to Face? I read Images myself but it was such a fast, whirlwind read on my part I don't think I got the analogy there. I am dying to see this film myself and Criterion did not really respond to my inquiry, I don't know why.

Which release is the best? The German or the American release? I understand Swedish fluently so the German release wont be any problem for me
