re; Mabel

I just recieved the 3 season dvd box set and am really enjoying it. Brings back memories of youth. I think it is a sweet show light and not mean spirited (except) the fat jokes. Roger really is a nice guy and his relationship with Dee is often histerical! But I especially love Mama her humorous spirit her pretty face and sultry voice! I'm envious that they got hugs from her all the time that would have bin something special. But I'll just have to enjoy the memories threw the dvds!

I'm guessing you've seen the other seasons since Mabel King (unfortunately) didn't appear in the third season.

We were watching the DVD's at home the other day and I said the almost the exact same thing to my family. I said that I've always wanted to be hugged by Mabel and I think she is so pretty and kind.

I watch my DVD's quite often and even my kids love the show now. A true classic with much heart.

I agree. That show was the best. Period. I own the DVDs too and love watching them. It brings back great memories, growing up a child of the 70s. And yes, Mabel King gave off such a great energy. So sweet and what a beautiful face and smile she had.

One of my favorite shows as a kid. When the show started with the music and the guys were walking down the street, it was like hanging out with friends.

If memory serves me correctly it was on ABC on Friday nights.

I thought the directors and writers handled her weight very well. They didn't pretend it wasn't there. There were some tender moments (such as the one in which she consoled Rerun) and some funny ones (like when she couldn't fit into the school desk at night school and had to "improvise"). Plus not once was she treated as being unattracive in any way.

I wholeheartedly agree!!! Mabel was never portrayed or written as physically unattractive due to her size. She was always a strong, loving, attractive woman.
Being of the age that grew up in the time when the show was originally aired, I have a strong affection for the show and it's characters. This was a family and friends I would've loved to know IRL. I have the complete series DVD set and am really enjoying watching it again. Brings back great memories. Also brings back memories of a time when things like "fat jokes" were not so "politically incorrect" as today. It wasn't mean-spirited on the show, just light humor. I think nowadays TV takes lighthearted humor too seriously. Mabel King was a beautiful woman and a beautiful person. Fred Berry and Shirley Hemphill were also beautiful people. Upon reflection it was great that a TV show existed that wasn't just full of unrealistic model types. Literally half of the regular cast of this show was overweight, and never portrayed as less than anyone else. Bravo to "What's Happening"!
