I can't wait. WH is one of the greatest sitcoms ever. Still love it to this day.

I learned so much about the cast by watching that.

Alot of that stuff I had no idea of. Suprising what goes on behind the scenes of a series.

Wow. Blew me away to hear them being so candid about Fred Berry, may he RIP. Just wow. Even Shabba-Doo. I knew and read he had struggled with drugs and pretty much became the character to the point of wanting to be called Rerun... but wow! Cocaine is "one helluva drug". What an ego he had.

Ernest Thomas didn't talk about the disease he had which resulted in his loss of an eye, but the things he did reveal were just as sad. So glad he overcame his obstacles and was "born again". He is a true legend.

Danielle Spencer looked lovely. I'd read about that accident and her physical challenges to overcome it. Still, it was heartbreaking to see that coverage of the accident.

They didn't talk that much about Shirley Hemphill. I was looking to hear more about her personal life. Her death was glossed over. I read somewhere that she was found dead and alone after a few weeks in her apartment.

And the part about Mabel being a double amputee due to diabetes and ending up in the actors hospital was just heartbreaking. She truly was the HEART of WH and when she left, so did the sensibility.

Howard Nelson and Danielle seemed to be the only ones who didn't fall prey to the lure of drugs.

So much tragedy befall these people who gave us so much joy and laughter on screen.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode of Hollywood UNSUNG.

My guess is that TV One already covered Ernest Thomas' issues w/ his eye (and his other post-WH!! struggles in better detail) on their Life After show.

Oh yes. I did see that. Good point.

"Even Shabba-Doo."

I was so suprised to see Shabba-Doo. Now I hope they do a Breakin' Unsung episode. Or maybe even profile the Lockers themselves.

Also, I think Shirley Hemphill was barely spoken of because she was a very private person even until the end, she barely even had many close friends aside from those she mentored in the industry(like Martin Lawrence). I had a chance to talk alittle bit with Danielle Spencer and Ernest Thomas at Comicon a few years back and they said Shirley was fiercely private and they couldnt really keep in contact with her as she would change her phone number numerous times without much notice, so its not much of a suprise that she passed away alone.

I was reading about the Unsung episode on the Television Without Pity forum for What's Happening!! and some of the posters asked if it was true that Shirley Hemphill was gay?

reply

I saw Shirley Hemphill in person when I went to Martin Lawrence's first wedding in 1995. There was someone at the door of the hotel asking to see everyone's invitations before they could get in the hotel. But when Shirley arrived, they asked for no invitation and said "Go ahead in, Ms. Hemphill!"
