I have the entire series on DVD (Books 1 & 2), but have not watched Book 2 yet, at least partly because Tom is not in it. I will eventually, and I vaguely remember seeing parts of it when I was a kid, but I know it's nothing like Book 1.
Tom Jordache has so much action swirling around him! He's the Black Sheep of the Jordache family, he's always getting into trouble, and he does not care what anyone thinks of him. The contrast between Tom and Rudy (also a great character, BTW) is spelled out early when Rudy tells him he smells "like a wild animal". The scene when Tommy lures that boxer into the enclosed space (Tom's hotel room), putting them on equal ground, and he just takes that guy apart! No mindless brute, Tom Jordache! Love that scene, even if it does foreshadow what eventually happens with Falconetti (he had to run from gangsters, and he got away with it that time...but he knew he couldn't run forever, tried to change - but could not tolerate a bully)...so sad (not being able to escape his fate, no matter how hard he tried. Trouble just seemed to find him), and Rudy vowing revenge - that brotherly love coming to the fore after all their differences - makes it all the more touching. A great, modern, tragic character...
RMPM was the first I'd ever seen Nolte, and I've been a huge fan ever since!
