How did Rudy Jordache become so stupid in Book II
I mean, he was sort brilliant in the original miniseries and is an idiot in Book II.

He was rich, and hollywood makes the rich and powerful stupid even though they are rich and powerful.
In book II, Rudy is a whiner and complainer. He thinks he is the captain of a starship, he points his fingers at people in an admonishing way and yells at the them with a shrilling voice that makes me wish the Monty Python foot would stomp down on him and shut him up.

Thats kind of the point tho. Thats Rudy's arch in Book 2, getting back to his roots. He starts of at the top of the tree politically and financially, and then Esteps wrecks his s**t and he is forced to contend with the threat to his power, plus the responsibility of caring for the two boys, Wesley and Billy.
This is what drives him in to the arms of Kate, his brothers wife, as he craves the simpler and less complex life his brother enjoyed in France.
Then he has to put his problems with Estep aside and save Billy and Wesley from the man who murdered his brother, which shows he has finally decided to put family above his career, which was the mistake he made with Julie, neglecting her for the sake of his political career.
I don't think Rudy was stupid at all. But I am in agreement with you, Jonthan22! As you say, that was the arch in Book 2 for the character he portrayed - having to contend with all in the face of adversity, and in the process come to the conclusion of what matters the most in life. Book 2 develops and rounds out Rudy's character amicably and makes you more sympathetic to most of his situations.
