It's always a tentative ground they tread when creating a sequel of this magnitude. What I always keep in mind is that "Books 1 & 2" are completely different 'beasts'. The original epic mini-series depicted a 2-decade journey of the main characters. The weekly series sequel was transfixed to a specific era or time period, if you will, just like a snapshot of the family's life and events of that particular time, which just happened to be five years on in the story. Therefore, the making of the sequel was approached differently and required its own type of format. Naturally, 'Book 2' isn't as good as 'Book 1', but I feel that comparing the two together is somewhat unfair because of the difference in scale and approach. However, it's still a good and entertaining production in itself and has always maintained its popularity throughout the UK and Europe. When 'Book 2' received a worldwide re-run via Sky in 1990 - the Spanish presented Peter Strauss with their prestigious television award for "Best Foreign Actor". :-)
