I dont know where you last saw but Max Van Der Rheede has a grudge against James because he believes that he was teh cause Theodor, his vulnerable brother, committing suicide when he outsmarted the brothers in a business deal. Max plans to frame James for theft. Baines has quarrelled with James over the death of Tom Arnold. He uses Baines to plants a diamond necklace in James' ship just before he's about to sail for Amsterdam. Baines took soem charts on board the ship nad unknowingly carried on the necklace.
James is arrested, but eventually Baines and the family find out the truth and J is released. He goes after Max and brings him back to face British justice. Meanwhile Samuel's marriage to Caroline is not going too well and Sam starts to see Charlotte again... Elizabeth and Daniel however have a reconcilation by letter and he tells her that he's going to resign his post and come home to her...

James sails for S America alone to start up a new venture which he hopes will restore him to prosperity. he then discovers that Margarita has stowed away on the ship, and insists on being with him. He has become reconciled to Baines. Then in S. America he finds that an Englishman has set up there and controls the local labour so he cant find people to work for him. He learns that Margarita is pregnant and says that she must have her baby in a hospital. Marg however uses her knowledge of Spanish to solve the problems iwth finding local labour and J offers the Englishman a job managing the business on the spot.. Back home Eliz has been expecting Dan's return, but learns that he's been drowned on the way home.

In S America, before J can get M to a hospital she goes into labour. He is very worried but she gives birth safely to a son, and he calls him William after Baines. That's teh end!

Thanks. Does anyone know what year it was at the end and how old they were all supposed to be?

I think that they "Set" it as 1887 - (IIRC the stuff about Alex of Battenberg was somehwere after 1885 in RL) and James says to Marg when he meets her that hes 47... but of course they had to fudge the ages as the series had lasted such a long time.. Initially Charlotte was born 10 years after William but when they became a romantic couple they were both set at the same age of 17...
