Why did Damon just leave the girl in the barn?

What was his problem? What could possibly be wrong with having sex with his girlfriend as she tore off her clothes in front of him? He just walked away. So what if he was about to break up with her? What the hell????

Because he was an honorable man. Since he knew he might not be coming back to her, he did not want to be responsible for "ruining" her. Remember this was 1917 or so. Attitudes towards sex would have been quite different then.
