I saw this when it came on NBC back in 1976. I just got the DVD recently and started watching it again. I remember very little after 34 years.
I don't think I would have caught on back in '76 (I was very young) but it's very clear so far that Cort doesn't want to be with his wife and appears to have issues with women. Is the understanding that he is really a homosexual?
Yes, he was gay. This was treated a little more openly in the book than the miniseries.
Quite incorrect! Massengale had a physical condition that was discussed in the book. I don't recall the medical terminology, but a physical problem was discussed. Gay/straight issues were not mentioned, either in the book or miniseries.
UPDATE:I checked the book, and the condition was called ejaculatia praecox. Make of it what you will, no homosexuality issue was mentioned.

No, it is strongly implied in the book that Massengale is, if not gay, then at least bisexual.
In the scene when Damon's wife makes a pass at him, he reacts so strongly that she realizes it; and later there is a scene with Massengale and his Khotianese/Vietnamese houseboy that has some sort of homosexual physical act involved.
Massengale was a douche.
