Copyright 1974?

If the show aired starting in 1976, why do the first couple of episodes say copyright 1974? And then the next episodes say 1975?
Unless they shot the episodes a year before they aired??

No one can really say how long the project was in development before it finally reached the airwaves, so my guess is the copyright was obtained in its early stages.

The first two episodes were shot in late 1974 as a pilot presentation for the networks. ABC, CBS, and NBC all passed on the project. At that point Norman Lear decided to try and sell it as a first-run syndicated series. It took nearly another year to get it off the ground.
