Yes Sargebri, they did give one.

In this episode "Short on Time"
Season 8, Ep. 16 ~ Feb. 8th, 1983

The main story of the shw is that Frank really needs to talk to
Laverne but she's too busy for him, in getting ready to go ot to a concert.

Frank ends up watching Chuck's chimp for Laverne and he actually reveals
that new to the chimp. (Chuck is Laverne's co-worker at an Areo-Space plant.)

Betty Garret actually left after the end of Season 6 &
the May 26th, 1981 season ending episode "Child's Play".

She never appeared as a regular cast member of a TV show after that.

Yeah, but that really doesn't tell me anything. Did she leave him or did they wind up killing her off?

Yes, Frank tells Laverne at the end of that episode that Edna has left him.

The reason Betty Garrett actually left is because she thought they were retiring the show after Season 7. Then Cindy Williams had a dream which told her that she should commit to another season, te e told Penny Marshall and she agreed to continue playing Laverne. But Betty Garrett had already signed up to do a Broadway show, because she thought Laverne and Shirley was done. They also shot two different endings just in case a Season 8 did happen.

I wonder what the original ending was?

This really didn't seem like something Edna would do. They got all the way through season 7 with just mentioning Edna from time to time. Then, with just a few episodes left in the series, they concoct this silly reason to explain her absence.

Ironically, in the tag from an episode earlier in season 8, Frank is excited because he has a date... until he finds out she's the bearded lady in the circus. Why is he dating when Edna was still around?

She was arrested on a morals charge and sent to the California penitentiary for women at Chowchilla, CA.
