new things

Season 2 appears to have gotten new theme music -- and a new Nancy.

Yeah, at least in the George and Gracie Allen show they announced that another different actor would be playing the part another one had played.

Doing so broke the 4th wall (so to speak), but it also worked better than pretending as if this NEW NANCY had been there all along.

It wasn't a new Nancy, though. It was a new actress playing the same Nancy. Viewers didn't have a problem with that then.

The only reason I didn't have a problem with it was because I'd never seen the FIRST NANCY before when watching it back in the 70's.

So apparently I'd also missed seeing the entire 1st season.

And the NEW NANCY is also a better actress than the first one, but it's still pretty STRANGE to find an ENTIRELY NEW FACE sitting there in that FRAME on top of the PIANO and everyone acting as if it wasn't the least bit WEIRD to have replaced the OLD FACE with a NEW ONE.

I've also just read a message that says the NEW NANCY was the daughter of HAZEL from the other TV SHOW about the BAXTER family.

I can understand that. For me, the original actress playing Nancy actually looked as if she could be Sada Thompson's daughter. Apparently the network wanted someone with more sex appeal to play Nancy, so in came Meredith Baxter. But she was very good in the role, I agree.

The first season was just 6 episodes, and a summer replacement at that, so it would have been all too easy to miss it at the time.

For some reason I also can't see the NEW NANCY being as willing to forgive the husband as the other NANCY was when she caught him having sex with someone else in her own bed.

Because this NEW NANCY also FREAKS out when she figures out it was someone in her own class who was sending her all of those GIFTS (and was also STALKING her in the park and when she picks some herb from the neighbors garden).

So when she YELLS at that other guy in front of everyone the way she did, she probably also wouldn't be the type to just walk away (the way the other actress does) without shouting at the hubby ???

Then she also FREAKS OUT and runs for help when the guy that she dated back in HIGH SCHOOL who's on drugs attacks her and keeps insisting that she marry him right away.

And that's why one imagines the NEWER NANCY being much more EMOTIONAL than the previous Nancy had been when she caught the hubby cheating on her, and then forgives him, and goes back to living with him again (after her mother also told her how her father had done the same thing to her).

Imo, the NEW NANCY would probably also have been less likely to resume a relationship with her husband again the way the former one does.

I think you're right about that. And that could also be part of the reason they changed actresses, in order to have a new dynamic for the character of Nancy.

reply

Yes that's also what I'm thinking as well, that the former actress was more TIMID and UNASSERTIVE than the NEW ONE is (who is more the type who wouldn't put up with the kind of NONSENSE that the previous one did).

Because this NEW one is much more CONFIDENT about herself than the other one was (who seemed way too SHY to pull off those other scenes where she needs to be more CONFRONTATIONAL with the STALKER and with the former Captain of the HS Football team).

Also can't see the former NANCY having a ONE NIGHT STAND with TOMMY LEE JONES either the way this one did (while she was also getting engaged to marry her former professor).
