Jesus, Religion and Faith

I was watching this DVD and the scene where Joe Armagh argues with his sister, who is going to go to a convent whether he likes it or not. They have a passionate argument - he is faithless, she is overwhelmed by her catholic faith - and it struck me not only as good drama but good discussion of religion, what it means to some, what it doesn't mean to others. You never see that anymore. It's like taking the view publicly in TV or film that religion is bunk, as Joe thinks, is just too taboo. Religion is mostly not mentioned at all, or belief in tradional Judeo-Christian religion is just taken for granted, part of the background, or overtly promoted. But not non-belief. Suicidal these days, I guess, to say you don't believe.

Taylor Caldwell, the author of the original novel on which the series was based, was a devout Catholic - very often the only really happy people in her novels are the religious ones.
