reply

He had to run across the strip to Pappy's plane and back when the Zero was attacking, he jumped into a ditch for cover at which point the Zero got him

I am assuming you are really asking why they axed his character out of the series. I really don't know, but assume it was because the actor didn't fit into the series going forward for whatever reason (bigger job, personal problems, etc.) There was certainly no storyline reason to get rid of him. Anyone know the backstory?

reply

A good possibility is that they knew the series was facing cancellation (it only came back for Season 2 with support from Bob Conrad), and since they felt there was no need for Hutch in the finale, they killed him off in the next to last episode.

It allowed Red West to take the stage front and center as the unit's chief mechanic. A fair amount of season 2 involved Michelin to be insubordinate to Boyington and give Conrad a chance to show off in more brawls. Given that West and Conrad were good friends in real life maybe Conrad's desire to bring his friend onto the show was another reason to end Hutch on the show.

The name is Micklin, Andy Micklin. Michelin is a brand of tires you put on something better than a corsair called an automobile.

They changed the spelling when the family hit money and moved to Manhattan. They did not want their "poor as church mice" cousins to find them too easily so they changed the spelling. Of course nobody was going to tell ole' Andy to change his so they left it alone for him. Just having a little fun with you.

Red West who had a long association with Robert Conrad joined the show in Season 2 which the planning had already started well before filming. It was probably known by the time the last Season 1 episode was being readied for production so most likely NBC felt that the show did not need two regular mechanics on the series and did not want to pay two salaries. It did not help that Aresco's character was in the background for the most part.
