Lots of Magnum PI characters in this show

I just caught my first episode of Black Sheep Squadron, and I liked it.

I noticed two actors who would go on to Magnum PI on this show. Larry Maneti and the guy who played Mac (don't remember his name and didn't see it listed on IMDB so I don't know if he is a regular or just a guest apperance).

I love catching these old series and seeing actors who were stars in later series. It is fun to watch them when they weren't well known.

Also James Whitmore, Jr. (Billy Joe Bob and Did You See the Sunrise?)

I caught my second episode of Black Sheep today, and I recognized the guy from MacGyver was a colonel.

This show is filled with people who later stared or co-stared in their own series.

reply

Not their own series but other series produced by Stephen Cannell and Donald Bellisario. McKay and others have also shown up on J.A.G. Don't you people read credits other than the actors'?

reply

MacKay was also on NCIS(another DPB produced show) I think could be wrong though

Oakland Manetti and Whitmore were also on Rockford Files.(A Cannell show)I love Whitmores character on that show. He gives totally diffeerent persona than Gutterman.

And W.K. Stratton was in the pilot, Don't Eat The Snow In Hawaii.

Clyde Kusatsu is the man who guest starred and played ping pong on that episode. He was in my favorite Magnum PI episdoe named This Island Isn't Big Enough. He did the best John Wayne Impersonation I have ever seen. He is great in anything he's in. He was also in three other Magnum stories/episodes.

James Whitmore Jr. Played Gutterman and was in the episode called Billy Joe Bob. That was another fine episode. He also guest starred in the most famous 2 part Magnum named Did you see the Sunrise?

I noticed that, too... I always thought Black Sheep Squadron, abruptly cancelled, lived on through Magnum P.I. (obviously, these shows were produced by the same people for the same target audience).

The funny thing- with all the Black Sheep characters I saw, I never once recall seeing Pappy/Robert Conrad on Magnum.

reply

I think that is because Robert Conrad and Tom Selleck are both lead actors in series. The other guys from the series are more of supporting players. They were all very good.

reply

You may have a point with the lead actor thing. But as far as those other guys... I think they were a lot of low-budget, not-so-great actors. Magnum was a little better, but Black Sheep Squadron was not a show known for outstanding acting performances.

He could have guest stared if he wanted. They got Frank Sinatra on the show and he was as big as any performer of his time.

It would have been a lot of fun to reunite the whole Black Sheep Squadron on Magnum PI.

Conrad kept himself pretty busy with lots of TV movies, a mini-series and some even a couple series, which didn't draw a lot of viewers.

Both shows were produced by the same people, common practice in tv.

Jeff MacKay, French, played Mac, a recurring part, on Magnum. (Magnum geeks, and I mean that in the nicest sense of the word, as I'm one of ya, what was the name to the character MacKay played after Mac was blown up? IMDB has him playing "Lt. McReynolds" in all his apperances.) Maaan, just read he passed on, too. And he's Robert Redford's cousin???

W.K. Statton, Casey, was also on Magnum a couple of times, including the pilot.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

ism't hoss son or relative on that show too

reply

Dirk Blocker played Jerry Bragg. He is the son of Dan Blocker who played Hoss on Bonanza.

Dirk is now on Brooklyn 99. I think he looks a lot more like his dad now than when he was on Blacksheep.
