Bad movie, great character

I love Milius's work in The Big Wednesday and Conan the Barbarian. The second is my favourite movie of all time, but hell!, The Wind and the Lion is just bad. It's a child comedy with the atmosphere of the A Team tv series. For me, the only thing valuable of this movie is the strong character of US President Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Keith). Milius was inspired with him.

I agree with you only to the extent that I think Roosevelt is a more interesting character than Raisuli. Brian Keith is phenomenal. I did some scenes from this movie for a high school talent show a few years back, loads of fun although I hated the mustache I had to grow.

Do I gotta kill you to prove I like you?

reply

Gentlemen, let's open the movie with the credits over a giant Graham cracker!

I strongly disagree. This is one of the great all time movies. The only thing I truly did not like (the one thing that really bugs me) are some of the hand held shots. I don't know... maybe that's the way Milius wanted to shoot it.

I love this movie. Especially after forcing myself to rent and watch "Sex and the City" the movie... Milius' film is visual and mental morphene after seeing that movie.

I am 17 and I love this movie. I have never thought it as a children's story, I have always thought it as an adventure film based on a true story. What made me love this movie was the magnificent performance from the ever suave and charismatic Sean Connery, Brian Keith's understated Roosevelt, Jerry Goldsmith's rousing and exciting music score and the phenomonal visual style in which the movie is shot in.

The Theodore Roosevelt parts were fistpump worthy but every scene with Sean Connery certainly made the movie better than bad. A solid adventure film that only falters at the end.

Hear hear, sir.

I think some of the stuff with the Ambassador and the Sultan/Bashaw was arguably superfluous. But if that had been cut out, we would have missed two of the best scenes in the movie, so I can't complain about their inclusion.

It is not a children's film, although the audience are presented with the children's perspective with regards to the Raisuli - note the beach rescue. In their eyes Connery's character is a larger-than-life hero, more so as the film progresses. His many faults become less apparent as they spend more time with him and they begin to copy him, the son especially.
