Based on what?

In case anybody is misinformed, Roscoe Arbuckle was acquitted of the manslaughter of Virginia Rappe. After two mistrials the jury in the third trial not only acquitted Arbuckle, but presented a written statement saying that the prosecution should have apologized to him for arresting him on such flimsy evidence, Rappe was a party girl who had many abortions and her death was probably the result of the last one. His sole conviction from the affair was a fine for breaking the half-witted Volstead Act (which made tycoons out of small time bootleggers) by providing alcohol at the party.

In spite of this the Hays Office banned an innocent man from making films and destroyed him.

Absolutely correct, but few people know or care about historical facts when the legend is more salacious.
