I love this movie for a variety of reasons...Burt in his prime, Jerry, the Olds, Art Carney, great lines - and I believe it is where Burt popularized his distinct laugh... but I always REALLY loved this song they play... I don 't actually know the title - I'm assuming something like "Friends" as the chorus refers to that... they play it once during the movie when Burt is in the car listening on the radio to the band "live" from the Opry... and then it plays again over the credits.... I assume it is original for the film, and I believe a Jerry Reed penned song with Don Williams(?), but have never found it on anything (soundtrack, Jerry reed's catalog, etc.) anyone know anything?

The song is called "A Friend" Jerry Reed wrote the song, but as far as I know it has never be published outside of the movie, I did go to Jerry reeds web site and could not find anything about the song, beside that he wrote it for the movie

Will Mr.Reed ever release it in one of his albums? It was one of my faves you thought it was one of his major songs "Gator" at the begining but,it is a orginal.

Actually, there was a soundtrack, that had "A Friend", as well as many other songs from the movie, including "Harbor Lights" and "Mama Was a Convict" (Ned Beatty's song). I was lucky enough to have found a copy of the album many years ago, in a discount rack. So, they were out there at one time, but probably very scarce now. The only thing I can think of would be ebay.

Just heard that Jerry Reed had passed. I hope someone would play it on You Tube since it is a wonderful song. Along with his other hit songs "A Friend" would be among them. He would be missed.

It was released on a Compilation Album. Jerry Reed - 20 of the Best (1982). And it appeared on an Album called Mind Your Love (1975). Both are available on eBay. However, not available on CD. Only vinyl.

I remember the song Friends was used in a movie with Mackenzie Phillips in it, maybe Fast Friends (1979)(TV).
