I think it was pretty ground breaking when it came out.

This is a very solid and exciting ahead-of-its-time 70's post-nuke sci-fi/action blast which benefits greatly from having Yul Brynner, Max Von Sydow and especially legendary B-movie tough guy William Smith in its cast. They all turn in excellent performances. Moreover, this film was the definite prototype for such latter entries in the genre as "Mad Max" and "Escape from New York." The fight scenes are really solid and thrilling, with the final confrontation between Brynner and Smith rating as the undeniable highlight. I keep hoping it would get released on DVD already.

And it is interesting...but where is the DVD? They must be having some pathetic legal dispute that is hobbling the release. Why not transfer the original on to DVD, see how it fares and then squabble over the dollars? The film has a solid story, good actors (hey, there's Yul Brynner and Max Von Sydow working it as hard as they can). The director, Robert Clouse, creates an authentic nuclear winter look and employs his skills as an action / actor's director to give gravitas to a Twilight Zone type story. It needs to be out there and in widescreen because some of these "B movies" offer something new films don't - personality and originality.

Just got the copy of the above mentioned film on DVD which has been remastered (in 16:9 widescreen) and it was a good as I remembered but unbelievable compared to my VHS copy.

It's actually a boring movie that suffers from weak dialogue, pathetic fight scenes, and a stupid plot. I say this as someone who's addicted to post-apocalypse flicks and really wanted to like this movie. The talents of Yul Brynner and Max von Sydow were totally wasted on this. Brynner in particular looked old and tired in the numerous fight scenes. He still sparkled when he was given something to say which (unfortunately) was not often. Max von Sydow was as good as usual although he seemed slightly bored. If so, I can't say as I blame him....

I have to agree with Eradan, but I think he's being too kind, I thought the movie sucked. Fight scenes looked ridiculous and yeah, boring is the word. I like Yule, but this one was no good.

I have to disagree about the fight scenes. Carson (Yul Brynner's character) fought with brutal efficiency; no fancy moves, just practiced workmanlike killing. If it's not entertaining, it's because it's realistically random and ugly.

Overall, I'd say it's one of the more realistic post-apocalypse movies in terms of how people live.

Two matters of note: 1) In real life, you wouldn't be able to travel through the subway tunnels because they'd be completely flooded; every day, they pump a million gallons of groundwater out of the tunnels in Manhattan. The island sits atop a giant aquefer; 2) You could date this movie just by the blood. I don't know the composition of it, but action movies during most of the '70s were using a fake blood that looked like bright red paint.

I never get tired of re-watching this movie. I'm towards the middle right now and that's what brought me here again.

It's completely on youtube. Enjoy while you can if you haven't seen it yet.
