The battle at the end was pathetic.

The Queen of the Night has that big army and the you're telling me the second her husband shows up they're just gonna run away without any fight at all? Now I didn't watch this expecting any fighting but come on, at least try to make it look like there was something resembling a struggle.

Other than that this production was pretty good.

You should check out Die Hard or Lord of the Rings or something.

I totally agree. I actually happened to pause this movie at the beginning of what i though was going to be a huge (relatively speaking) battle scene. When I got back I pressed play and it was over in about 2 seconds. What was the point of that if they were just going to run away? Other than that this was a brilliant film, just wish there was a little more closure between the husband and wife. Bergman never ceases to amaze me.

Oh, and what's wrong with Die Hard and LOTR? Blasphemy.

Nothing is wrong with them. This is an Opera by Mozart. I must admit that since my last post I watched it again and they do just kind of wuss out. Sarastros ultra piercing gaze must have freaked them out or something...

I have lots of recordings, and a couple of DVDs of different productions, and believe it or not, this treatment was pretty good. Remember, you are constrained by Mozart's music, and he only wrote so much. You have to wrap it up pretty fast. This sequence is probably always a problem for stage directors, because so much happens so fast. My adult children felt the same way. It's inherent in the piece.
