On the other hand, I liked Tommy when he was a mute. He turned into a complete narcissist when he opened his mouth. And whatever happened to his pinball wizard dreams? I was expecting the ending to be a big pinball tournament in which he loses - not mass cultic upheaval that result in violent murders and sends Tommy running for his life.

Good movie. Good music.

True about the 'narcissist', perhaps, but two of the best songs of the score - both "I'm Free" and "See Me, Feel Me" - are sung by Tommy, post-recovery. So it actually helped the plot to have him get over his handicaps, if you ask me.
