Read the book!

I loved the movie until reading the book. That made me realize just how much the movie missed the mark by condensing and watering down the plot and character development way too much, taking away the books sheer intensity and suspense. I read that the movie was plagued by budget problems and I wonder if the original intent for the movie was something closer to the book but that it got cut in production, because several things that are unclear in the movie are explained in great detail in the book. That was particularly a missed opportunity with the stellar cast and great scenery that the movie had. If I had a few million dollars to spare, I'd do the movie the right way!
