This movie is quite racist.

The only black character is a crazy sex maniac who acts like an animal. It is very disgusting.

I like it when Chiba ripped his dick out, and dropped it like it was turkey
hilarious

I'd like to think that the only black person who happens to be in the film just happens to be the rapist as well. Maybe the film makers were trying to make a statement about black people, but all the white people weren't exactly all goodguys either. Therefore, the film makers were probably going for a broader, anti-American overtone, where black people were just included in a general racist statement. It should be noted, that I've seen other films from Japan and Hong Kong which don't portray Americans/Westerners pretty friendly, but this is the first where I've seen a black character included in the American generalization.

reply

actually the point was that americans are sex crazed maniacs.

In japan most black people are either nigerian born or transplants from america and former us soldiers.

They're seen as "sex crazed" by the japanese for various reasons, including the frequent visits japanese brothels or soapland.

However, the film does bring up racism, it's basis is that terry tsurugi is actually half chinese and half japanese, thus his life has been harder than most according to the characters.

If people like you go looking for racism, you can find it everywhere..

reply

Maybe I should have said ignorant. There's no reason to start the generalizations up again, with the whole "people like you" statement.

reply

It is you who is beign racist by pointing out that the only black character in the film is this or that. You shouldn't care.

At the risk of sounding racist myself, in the mid-seventies when this film was made, such depictions of black people were still considered to be a conventional norm. The fact is, the only black character in this film is depicted in a most degrading, depraved way. The white Americans aren't portrayed particularly well either. And the Chinese characters are also broad caricatures. Remember, the movie was made for as mass market pulp for Japanese audiences.
In grindhouse, exploitive films of that era, racism was not unusual. It was considered part of the simple, standard shorthand to introduce, and usually kill off, unpleasant characters. You can't hate a villian and root for the hero to dispatch him if he isn't totally dispicable. And in Japan, where the society is particularly insular, exaggerated racial depictions shouldn't be unexpected or really taken too personally. I'm not saying that it's right or admirable, but the characterizations are supposed to be broad and stereotypical, not true depictions of individuals. The black rapist is vile, but shouldn't be considered representitive of his race.

I agree with Xardas, When I see an actor I don't pay attention to the color of their skin.

If you want Batman to be your savior add this to your post.

What the hell? When did "people like you" become a racist statement? I've never seen a Nazi skinhead walking around with a slogan, "You People" on the front. Maybe by "people like you" he meant idiots. Or people playing with a full deck of race cards. Or people who look way further into things than they ought to. Or English teachers. Or elephants. He could've meant any number of things with "people like you."

So explain the Smurfs to me, you PC twit. Give me the days when movies were brutal and unapologetic- just like life. That character could have easily been white or Asian or whatever and it wouldn't have made a difference. In the meantime indulge yourself in the drivel that's coming out of Hollywood these days and dream your little drems of a hippie Utopia where there is no violence or death or taxes or red meat. Twerp.

Nope. Wrong, wrong, wrong. You have a fundamentally flawed understanding of racism, and I hereby move to formally prohibit you from future discussions of the topic. Hear ye, hear ye.

it is just a friggin movie....

i live in china(but actually i am german) the war movies here show japanese people as hating, raping demon spawns of hell. every war movie made in china insists on "killing a japanese is a good thing"...for a reason? well sort of and sort of not. they take this stuff far more series and many people here hate japanese for the war and the najing massacre etc.

here the hero who is a mixed blood get rids of all of them(japanese, americans, chinese) so why do you care? which movie doesn't have an equal amount of racism in it. before the american movie industry made movies were the germans and russians are the bad guys, cold blooded people with no heart(i am german and i am not offended by it). indiana jones is a great example, every german in the movie was a NAZI SWINE!...get over it!

Wow, a far more interesting discussion than i expected to find about this movie. Unfortunately i haven't much to offer in the way of debate, as i find it easy to see both sides (kinda). Being that i am a white male i cant really claim to have a sense for racism the way that someone who would more often be the target of it would, so my opinion wouldnt carry any weight, even if i had much of one. If my race were portrayed in a movie as a sex crazed maniac i wouldnt be too mad, because i know a lot of people like that. In fact, if youve seen American Pie, Porky's, Van Wilder, or any of those other "white kids go to college movies" then, we already have been, and i am ok with that. Who doesnt enjoy acting crazy and getting laid ... im a big fan.

reply

Where do we find out in the film he is half chinese?

reply

It's mentioned sometime, I can't remember exactly when. In the scene where his father gets shot the soldiers call him a half breed or something similar and a few of the antagonists call him that.

reply

I never really understood that shooting scene. Were those Japanese or Chinese soldiers? Was that during WWII?

reply

I always thought that those soldiers were Chinese and shot Takuma's father because they thought he was a spy. And I do think it was around WW2.

reply

Yeah, I thought they were Chinese too. However, they wear the same uniform as the Japanese in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, so they might have been Japanese. Which version of the film have you seen, English dubbed or subtitled?

I just watched the English dubbed (got it from the Internet Archive) and ordered the Japanese version afterwards. This movie was awesome!
